What is Reiki?

Reiki is a popular and beneficial healing modality that is utilised for health and wellness. It is based on energetic principles and is practiced in many hospitals, medical settings, and in private practice all around the world. Reiki is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin, combining the Japanese word (Rei) meaning “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”.

Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living things. Reiki practitioners understand that everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy and use it to strengthen energy in themselves and help others. It is believed that a person’s “ki” or energy should be strong and free flowing. When this is true a person’s body and mind is in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance.

What can Reiki do for you?

A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels – physical, mental, and emotional.

Reiki is a pleasant and effective tool to aid with stress reduction and relaxation which can help to improve your overall performance. When the body and mind are relaxed, the body can work to repair and heal and the mind may function with more clarity. Thus, Reiki may assist the body in creating an environment to facilitate self healing by calming the nervous system to allow for physical, mental, emotional or spiritual healing to take place. There are many conditions that Reiki may help with including balancing of the chakras (energy centres) and bringing alignment to aspects of the body, mind and spirit. Reiki is a great tool to use as a compliment to traditional medicine and can form part of your overall wellness plan.

What does Reiki feel like?

At the practitioner’s hand placements, you may feel a very slight tingling, heat, or energy, or nothing at all. The sensations or lack of are not a barometer of the Reiki, they are just how your particular body senses energy. You may feel a sense of peace and calmness in your mind or physically in general. It is different for all clients but deep relaxation is almost always felt.

Some common experiences include:

  • Deep relaxation and a sense of a peace, calmness, and feeling refreshed

  • Feeling of being grounded, more centred, balanced and connected

  • An emotional release or ‘lightness’, ease of physical pain

  • Returning to a state of emotional and mental balance

  • Increased energy, clarity and insight and overall wellbeing

  • Reduction in stress, anxiety and negative emotions

  • Improved feelings of positivity and contentment

  • Rejuvenation of the body, mind and spirit (soul)

How long is a session and what is involved?

A session can last approximately an hour including an initial discussion about your current needs. This will provide you an opportunity to discuss any particular problems or issues that you may be experiencing and what you would like to achieve from the session.

During the session, you will be resting comfortably on a massage table, or seated in a chair if you prefer. Reiki can then be given with a light gentle pressure static touch or the practitioner’s hands may be a few inches/centimeters above your body at the hand positions with no actual touch. There are standard hand placements beginning at your head or feet, avoiding all sensitive body parts. Let your practitioner know prior to the session which you prefer, light touch or no touch.

Sometimes clients may fall asleep during the session which is fine, your body will still receive all of the benefits - it is just an indication that you have gone into a deep state of relaxation.

WHAT TO DO AFTER A REIKI SESSION?

In order to receive the full benefits of Reiki, it’s best to have some time to rest afterwards, preferably where you can also disconnect from technology and allow your body (both nervous system and immune system) to come back to its state of balance. Drinking lots of a water is a great idea, similar to what you would do during a detox process. Sometimes negative emotions get released so it’s ok to accept whatever arises and let it flow in order to let it go. This is ok, it’s all part of the healing process. Also be patient and kind to yourself, and sometimes shifts and healing can occur in stages - whatever is meant to worked on at that particular time will show itself. Sometimes changes don’t show up instantly, and you may notice shifts a few days later. Be open to noticing your frequency being lifted and overall feeling of wellness being enhanced.
